SUSAN NELIS MOYLAN

Accruing 25 years of professional experience to her credit, Susan Nelis Moylan directed the Business and Industry Center at Elgin Community College in Illinois from 1979 until her retirement in 2004. In addition to this tenure, she has served on the Gail Borden Library Board, as well as served the Gail Borden Library Foundation and the Pads of Elgin. At Ms. Moylan’s direction, the college bought a set of 12 laptops back in the 80s, and could take those computers out to a company and set them up in a boardroom to train people, which was innovative at the time. They also worked with communities and developed a program on zoning at least twice a year, where she taught them how to function with zoning laws, which was also very innovative. Her brother, Robert Nelis, taught the class. One year, they worked with the Illinois Manufacturing Association for a whole year, which paid for half of their training.

Prior to the start of her professional career, Ms. Moylan pursued a formal education at Loyola University in Chicago, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1964. Years later, she matriculated at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, where she attained a Master of Arts in 1999.

Active in her local community, Ms. Moylan was a Renz Addiction Counseling Center member of the United Way of Elgin in 1982, as well as president since 1990, and has been president of the Dukane Council of Geneva, Illinois, in 1983 and since 1989. She was also a councilwoman for the City of Elgin from 1985 to 1993 and served on the board of directors for the St. Edward High School Foundation in Elgin from 1986 to 1993. Presently, Ms. Moylan is an ethics committee member of St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin since 1988, a member of the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation since 1991 and a board member of Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin since 2009.

Outside of her primary trade, Ms. Moylan chaired the women’s council of the Elgin Chamber of Commerce from 1984 to 1985 and was president of her local chapter of the Rotary Club in 2002. In light of her accomplishments, she was named Political Leader of the Year by the Association for Individual Development in 1988 and was selected for inclusion in the fourth edition of Who’s Who in American Education. Today, Ms. Moylan is married to her loving husband of 54 years, William D. Moylan Jr., with whom she has raised four wonderful daughters, Elizabeth, Catherine, Rosemary and Martha. She is also a doting grandmother to 11 beloved grandchildren, and has been known to enjoy quilting in her spare time.
