JANICE L. COLMER WESTON

Active in her profession for nearly three decades, Janice L. Colmer Weston most recently served as the chief librarian of the U.S. Army Ordnance Center and School at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland from 1972 until her retirement in 1994. She began her professional career as a library clerk and education librarian at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1966, remaining in this position for one year before becoming a reference librarian at John Tyler Community College in Chester, Virginia, and branch librarian at Chester Library – Chesterfield County Public Library from 1969 to 1970. She then served as a librarian for U.S. Army General Equipment Test Activity at Fort Lee, Virginia, from 1970 to 1971 and reference librarian for Wood Technical Library at Aberdeen Proving Ground from 1971 to 1972. In addition to this tenure, Ms. Weston served on the job analysis task force for the U.S. Department of the Army in Washington in 1976 and chaired the Aberdeen Proving Ground Media Services Committee in 1978, 1983 and 1988.

Prior to the start of her career, Ms. Weston pursued a formal education at the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1966. She then matriculated at Wayne State University in Detroit, where she received a Master of Library Science in 1969. She went on to complete postgraduate coursework at the Catholic University of America in Washington and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 1975. Additionally, Ms. Weston is a certified professional librarian in the state of Virginia.

Contributing her time to many civic endeavors, Ms. Weston was a member of the James Buchanan Foundation in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, from 1977 to 2004, the Fulton Opera House Foundation and the Friends of the Library of Southern Lancaster County in Pennsylvania from 1985 to 2004, the Humane League Friends in Lancaster from 1988 to 2004 and the St. David’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Cocoa Beach, Florida, in 1996. Likewise, she has been active with the Friends of Atglen Susquehanna Trail since 1994 and the Friends of the Library of Cocoa Beach since 1996. A prolific writer, Ms. Weston has authored one book, “Operating Procedures,” which was published in 1988.

In order to keep up with trends in her field, Ms. Weston has maintained involvement with numerous related organizations such as the Special Libraries Association, the Retired Officers Association and the Red Hats Club. Now in retirement, she resides in Lithia, Florida, and has been married to her loving husband, Leonard Charles Weston, for 47 years. She is also a proud aunt to her three nieces, all of whom she helped support through college, and has been known to enjoy needlecrafts, reading, dancing, travel and theater in her spare time. Ms. Weston was selected for inclusion in the 58th edition of Who’s Who in America.
