Backed by expertise in Christian therapy, adoption, narcissism, PTSD, depression, and anxiety, Judy Sobczak continues to thrive as a licensed psychologist. She has worked out of her own private practice since 2002 and loves the fact that her job offers her the opportunity to work with clients from all walks of life. Dr. Sobczak has even treated clients who were key media figures, and although she can’t reveal their names, she takes pride in knowing that she’s part of the fabric of what’s going on in the world.
Dr. Sobczak considers the highlight of her career, however, to be meeting Dr. George Kates, the director and owner of a clinic she worked in early on. He has been a key figure in her life ever since; he’s who she turns to whenever she encounters a stumbling block or has a question or concern. Dr. Sobczak carried his advice with her as she navigated positions like as a staff psychologist at Outer Drive Hospital, psychologist for Adult/Youth Development Services, staff of the Orchard Hills Psychiatric Center and Northwestern Community Services, and psychologist at the Davis Counseling Center. She considers him to be the cornerstone of who she is as a psychologist.
Another one of Dr. Sobczak’s mentors is Dr. Barbara Brackney at Eastern Michigan University. Dr. Brackney identified Dr. Sobczak as a promising doctoral candidate and did everything in her power to ensure her success. Thanks to these efforts, Dr. Sobczak ended up graduating from the University of Toledo with a PhD in 1987. Her other designations include a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo and a license in psychology.
Outside of her practice, Dr. Sobczak is very active in her community. She is a member of organizations like the American Psychological Association, the Michigan Psychological Association, and Phi Kappa Phi, and a fellow of Michigan Women Psychologists. She has also served Michigan Women Psychologists as a president, president-elect, consultant editor, secretary, treasurer, newsletter editor, and charter member over the years. Some of her more civic endeavors include member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Auction Committee, secretary and board member of the Children Are Precious Respite Care Center, parish council member and Eucharistic minister of St. Anthony Catholic Church, and co-chairman of the Catholic Appeal Service.
