Karen A. Hirschman

Karen A. Hirschman has established herself as a leading expert in residential interior design throughout her career, with a particular passion for whole-house renovations. Since 2004, she has excelled as the owner and interior designer at Karen Hirschman Designs, Inc., located in Ruston, Washington. In this capacity, she spends much of her day working alongside new designers to whom she leases space in her studio, fostering their growth and development within the profession. Ms. Hirschman’s approach is characterized by her commitment to listening attentively to clients, documenting their ideas and preferences with precision and care. She ensures that every detail is recorded and organized for ongoing reference, either by taking notes herself or with the assistance of a team member.

A hallmark of Ms. Hirschman’s process is her practice of photographing each project in its original state. These images provide an essential reference point, allowing her to compare clients’ aspirations with the existing character of their homes. This careful observation often reveals that the desired outcome aligns with the home’s established style and color palette, guiding her toward solutions that respect both history and vision.

Over more than two decades at the helm of her firm, Ms. Hirschman has cultivated lasting client relationships, some spanning as long as 21 years and evolving into genuine friendships built on trust and mutual respect. Clients rely on her direct involvement and meticulous attention to detail, confident that their needs will be addressed personally.

From 2003 to 2015, Ms. Hirschman found success as an interior designer with the Washington State Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. Her leadership was further recognized through her service as past president of the chapter, where she helped advance professional standards within the field. A member of the American Society of Interior Designers, Ms. Hirschman is additionally affiliated with both the National Kitchen and Bath Association and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists.

Ms. Hirschman’s dedication to education is evident in her role as an instructor at Clover Park Technical College, where she taught interior design business courses for one and a half years. She continues to mentor emerging designers through a program she developed to support those transitioning from academic training into professional practice. Her mentorship extends beyond formal instruction, she meets weekly with mentees in her studio, sharing practical knowledge and insights gained from decades of experience.

Ms. Hirschman’s academic journey began after returning to the United States in 1979 following five years in Europe while her husband worked for a Department of Defense agency. In 1982, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture from The University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. Later motivated by a desire for comprehensive understanding rather than simply starting a business without formal training, Ms. Hirschman graduated with a bachelor’s degree in interior design at Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, Washington in 2004.

Ms. Hirschmanfurther enhanced her qualifications by obtaining certification as an associate kitchen and bath designer. The support of her family—especially her husband—has been instrumental throughout her educational pursuits and career milestones. In 2004, mentorship from Nicole Buchanan played a pivotal role as she introduced Ms. Hirschman to all facets of running an interior design business. Inspired by this guidance, Ms. Hirschman eventually launched her own mentorship program for new designers in 2022 after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The following year, she moved into a commercial space to provide greater credibility and resources for participants.

Beyond her primary commitments, Ms. Hirschman has demonstrated civic engagement through her involvement with Habitat for Humanity from 1999 to 2001. Her work has been recognized with multiple honors including interior design awards from the Master Builders Association between 2008 and 2010 and two volunteer awards.

Looking toward the future, Ms. Hirschman intends to continue supporting students as they launch their own businesses and careers through mentorship initiatives at her studio. She finds fulfillment when mentees gain confidence and independence under her guidance. Above all, Ms. Hirschman strives for her name to be synonymous with trustworthiness—ensuring that clients receive results aligned with their true desires even when circumstances require creative solutions.
