Irma Hale’s distinguished career is marked by her role as founder and executive director of The Artwork of Reuben Hale, Inc., beginning in 2019 in West Palm Beach, Florida. In this capacity, she has dedicated herself to raising funds for the museum, managing finances, curating exhibits and preserving and promoting Reuben Hale’s artwork. Furthermore, she is responsible for maintaining the museum gardens, conducting tours, building and strengthening the board of directors and ensuring the institution’s continuation beyond her lifetime. The establishment and operation of the museum stand as Ms. Hale’s most notable professional achievement.
Ms. Hale considers the acceptance of the museum into the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation to be a tremendous honor and validation of her efforts to preserve her father’s legacy. Her vision for the museum extends beyond its walls, as she aspires to travel extensively to showcase Reuben Hale’s work in museums and galleries across the country and internationally, driven by a desire to secure recognition for his artistry.
In addition to her administrative tasks at the museum, Ms. Hale has maintained an active career as a photographer since 1995. Her creative pursuits are complemented by her tenure as contributing editor for The Castles of Wales Website from 1997 to 2022, where she also contributed photography. From 2001 to 2011, she excelled as the lighting director for Palm Beach Opera, overseeing technical aspects of stage lighting for productions. In 2008, Ms. Hale worked as the production manager and technical director at PORTopera, further demonstrating her expertise in performing arts management.
Ms. Hale’s earlier experience includes periodic work as an electrician at Royal Poinciana Playhouse between 1978 and 2003. In Antarctica, she provided electrical support for scientific research bases with Antarctic Support Associates from 1999 to 2000 and Raytheon Polar Services from 2000 to 2001. Ms. Hale’s provided critical electrical support for the U.S. Antarctic Program at McMurdo Station and field camps such as Marble Point, Lake Fryxell and Byrd Surface Camp under extreme conditions.
From 1990 to 1998, Ms. Hale served as the master electrician and technical specification author at Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, where she led technical teams and contributed to major productions. She was an electrician for the New York City Ballet from 1980 to 1986 and again in 1997, as well as lighting designer for Ballet Florida from 1987 to 1990. Ms. Hale’s technical skills were further utilized as an AutoCAD draftsman with Suntech Engineers from 1988 to 1989.
Ms. Hale’s editorial experience includes operating as editorial assistant at Intellectual Activist from 1985 to 1986. She contributed as a stage manager at Walt Disney World between 1982 and 1984, an electrician at New York City Opera from 1980 to 1983, an electrician at Saratoga Performing Arts Center from 1981 to 1982 and a front light operator at Madison Square Garden from 1979 to 1981. Ms. Hale’s early technical career included posts as electrical supervisor for automated machine control wiring and draftsman with Kostur Enterprises from 1978 to 1980.
Ms. Hale’s professional journey began with supervisory responsibilities at AHF Marketing Research from 1977 to 1978 before embarking on a unique year-long engagement as a showgirl and aerialist with Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus/Red Unit from 1976 to 1977, traveling with the circus and living in a three-by-five-foot room on the train. Additionally, Ms. Hale refined her skills as a union stagehand with IATSE in the late 1970s.
Throughout these diverse roles, Ms. Hale developed expertise in museum leadership, performing arts and Antarctic science support. She has been recognized for her ability to adapt skills learned in each position, whether technical proficiency or creative problem-solving, into her current leadership responsibilities at the museum. Ms. Hale’s approach is informed by a deep appreciation for relationships formed throughout her career, valuing connections that have proven beneficial over time.
Ms. Hale maintains her association with several industry-related organizations including I.A.T.S.E. Local 500 since 1979. She also remains aware of the latest updates to her industry standards through her affiliate membership with the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, The Historical Society, The American Polar Society, The Antarctican Society, The Orchid Society, The Genealogical Institute on Federal Records, and MPMO.
Ms. Hale’s academic background includes undergraduate coursework in physics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey and New York University, music studies, and piano performance coursework at The University of Southern Mississippi, Palm Beach Atlantic College and Florida Atlantic University. She also completed six years of piano performance study which fostered the discipline and creativity that have supported her multifaceted career path.
Ms. Hale attributes much of her success to values instilled by her parents, particularly their emphasis on excellence and dedication, and credits her mother’s philosophy of striving for one’s best effort in all endeavors and drawing inspiration from her father Reuben Hale’s diverse talents and creative problem-solving abilities. The culmination of these influences became evident following Reuben Hale’s passing in 2018; soon thereafter, she founded The Artwork of Reuben Hale Museum with nonprofit status secured in 2019. Ms. Hale’s motivation stemmed from a desire to preserve his artistic legacy for public recognition.
Beyond her professional achievements, Ms. Hale is involved with civic-minded organizations such as Daughters of the American Revolution. Her contributions additionally include her time as contributing editor and photographer for The Castles of Wales Website, a project that allowed her to combine editorial skills with creative visual documentation.
Looking toward the future, Ms. Hale is committed to expanding The Artwork of Reuben Hale Museum into a larger organization with increased financial stability and a strengthened board of directors while developing new exhibits such as “Reuben Hale: A Centennial Celebration” at Southern Illinois University alongside “Reuben’s Legacy” at the Reuben Hale House featuring works by former students who became professional artists themselves. Her ongoing dedication centers on fundraising efforts, operational management and building infrastructure necessary for long-term sustainability while preserving both institutional legacy and artistic heritage for future generations.
