Drawing on an extensive background in journalism and artificial intelligence (AI), Sonia Talati founded Heirlooms Inc. in 2024 and currently serves as the company’s chief executive officer. Under development for almost 2 years, this organization aims to help families preserve and share their stories, values and insights across generations through artificial intelligence-driven storytelling. Ms. Talati’s vision for Heirlooms Inc. is rooted in her experience reporting on affluent families for Barron’s Penta magazine, where she observed the challenges parents face in passing down lessons and family history to their children. Though working with AI technology, her approach emphasizes authenticity, ensuring that the human spirit is preserved.
Before founding Heirlooms Inc., Ms. Talati held the position of senior leader for conversational AI at GoDaddy Operating Company LLC between 2021 and 2024, honing her leadership and expertise in AI through advanced initiatives focused on integrating technology to become easier to use. In the years prior, she worked as a voice UX designer for GEICO from 2020 to 2021 and an Alexa voice designer for Anthem Inc., now known as Elevance Health, in 2020.
In 2018, Ms. Talati co-founded her first company, HereAfter AI, an artificial intelligence startup dedicated to preserving stories through technology-driven storytelling. While this endeavor gained significant attention — including appearing on the front page of the Washington Post — the market was not yet ready for this technological advancement.
Ms. Talati’s earlier career includes work as a reporter at Barron’s under Dow Jones, where she wrote extensively about affluent families and the role of storytelling in legacy preservation. She was additionally active as a former researcher and intern for The Wall Street Journal from 2013 to 2014, during which time she contributed to multimedia journalism initiatives that expanded the publication’s digital reach and created one of their first multimedia narrative storytelling pieces. Her foundational roles in journalism and digital storytelling include serving with the Wall Street Journal, McClatchy Media, Chambers Communications and KTTC TV. She began her career as an executive producer and television host for “Eyes of the World: Looking Beyond” on Napa Valley TV in 2010, a philosophy she lives by today.
Ms. Talati’s career trajectory has been supported by a strong academic foundation. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in mass communications and economics from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2009. Subsequently, Ms. Talati earned a Master of Arts in business journalism from Columbia University in 2013.
An esteemed figure in her field, Ms. Talati has shared her wealth of expertise on the “VUX World” podcast. Her analytical abilities and storytelling acumen have been further backed up by her active membership in several groups, including the American Asian Journalist Association (AAJA), the South Asian Journalist Association (SAJA) and the New York Financial Writers’ Association.
Recognized for her thought leadership in AI ethics and innovation, Ms. Talati and HereAfter AI was featured in a 2021 Emmy Award-winning documentary from The Wall Street Journal about preserving legacy, an experience she considers among her proudest accomplishments as it earned the publication its first Emmy in 132 years. During her tenure with GoDaddy, the company was presented with the Stevie Award for Customer Service Team of the Year. Furthermore, HereAfter AI was celebrated among Business Insider’s Top 10 Start-Ups in the United States.
Ms. Talati attributes her success to her ability to clearly visualize goals and execute them with focus and discipline — a mindset instilled by her parents, who immigrated to the United States from India and emphasized discipline, effort and striving for excellence. She credits her parents’ description of her as a visionary as an influence on her approach to leadership and innovation. She has delivered keynote addresses at such events as the EU Chatbot & Conversational AI Summit in 2024, spoke at the RE•WORK Conversational AI Summit and the Virtual Worlds Summit, and moderated a panel for Voice Tech Global.
Ms. Talati’s work has consistently bridged journalism with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. Since 2018, she has been at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence into storytelling platforms—an endeavor inspired by her reporting on family legacies for Barron’s and further developed through administrative posts at major corporations, including Anthem, GoDaddy Operating Company LLC and GEICO.
Looking ahead, Ms. Talati intends to continue leading Heirlooms Inc., advancing its mission while supporting others in realizing their strengths. She aims to inspire individuals to develop confidence in their abilities through public speaking engagements that share her story and encourage others to reach their full potential. She encourages individuals she crosses paths with to engage in thoughtful self-reflection, identify their inherent strengths and talents and pursue goals that align with those abilities. She believes that such alignment fosters fulfillment, sustained satisfaction, meaningful success, and ultimately, the realization of one’s true purpose.
