Marialena Anagnostou Davis, PhD

Known for her expertise, adaptability and commitment to advancing patient-centered communication, Marialena Anagnostou Davis, PhD, has established a distinguished career in the scientific and medical writing fields. Since 2024, she has served as a regulatory medical writer at Aroga Biosciences, where she is responsible for meeting with cross-functional teams to discuss data and project plans, drafting and revising documents, conducting literature reviews for clients, and collaborating closely with medical leaders and biostatisticians. Dr. Davis’ role also involves significant client interaction, which has allowed her to further refine her communication skills. She is recognized for her contributions to the development of informed consent forms using plain language.

In addition to her primary position, Dr. Davis is also a life sciences analyst at PreScouter, a role she has held since 2022. In this capacity, she leverages her scientific background to analyze trends and provide insights that inform business decisions within the life sciences sector. Concurrently, Dr. Davis serves as chief executive officer of Perfect Home Desserts. Through this endeavor, she demonstrates her entrepreneurial spirit.

Earlier in her professional journey, Dr. Davis gained experience via postdoctoral research appointments at the University of Southern California from 2019 to 2021 and at the University of Florida from 2018 to 2019. These roles enabled her to deepen her expertise in neurodegeneration, rare diseases and mitochondrial disorders — areas that have shaped her subsequent work in regulatory writing and patient advocacy. She began her career in 2014 as a research assistant at Newcastle University, where she contributed to foundational research that laid the groundwork for her future academic pursuits.

Dr. Davis’ journey has not been without challenges. After nearly two years at Aroga Biosciences, her hours were reduced due to shifting company dynamics. Despite the challenges of this change in workload, Dr. Davis remained committed to excellence and began exploring new opportunities with renewed determination. Her transition from laboratory-based research to remote regulatory writing was influenced by the onset of COVID-19, requiring adaptability and resilience as she navigated new modes of collaboration and communication.

Underscoring her professional achievements, Dr. Davis has built a strong reputation for communicating complex scientific concepts in accessible ways. She honed this skill through years of working with highly educated colleagues in both academic and industry settings. Dr. Davis takes particular pride in presenting her research within broader frameworks, especially during her doctoral defense and at international conferences such as Oxford University, where she earned second runner-up honors for her presentation — a testament to both the quality of her work and its impact on peers within the scientific community.

While embarking on her career, Dr. Davis has been supported by an extensive and influential educational background, beginning with a 2010 bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of York. She obtained a master’s degree in molecular medicine from Cranfield University in 2011. Subsequently, Dr. Davis received a scholarship from The Ryan Stanford Appeal. This allowed her to earn a PhD from Newcastle University’s Faculty of Medical Sciences in 2018. Dr. Davis’ doctoral research focused on outer syndrome — a rare mitochondrial disease — and had a profound impact on her personally and professionally. She dedicated her work to studying this condition after being inspired by the story of a child affected by it; this experience deepened her commitment to patient-centered science.

Since finishing her PhD, Dr. Davis has continued to pursue additional credentials. In 2023, she completed a certified national pharmaceutical representative (CNPR) sales certificate from the National Association of Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives. Dr. Davis has also backed up her knowledge through active involvement in professional organizations such as the American Medical Writers Association and Women in Science and Business. She has shared her knowledge as a speaker for the Drug Information Association and for American Medical Writers Association webinars, further establishing herself as a thought leader in medical writing and regulatory affairs.

In considering her achievements so far, Dr. Davis attributes much of her success to unwavering dedication, ambition and the influence of family values instilled by her uncle. Her uncle is known for founding the Greek yogurt company Fage. He encouraged her pursuit of education over more conventional paths, which led her to leave Greece at age 18 to study in England.

Dr. Davis balances professional achievement with personal fulfillment as a spouse and parent. She is married to an American criminal defense lawyer and is the mother of one child. Outside of work, Dr. Davis enjoys running, cooking and baking. Looking ahead, she aspires to become a mentor within regulatory medical writing while continuing to expand into regulatory affairs roles that will allow her to make meaningful contributions toward ensuring patients benefit from accurate scientific submissions.
