Ms. Nguyen pursued higher education at California State University, Fullerton, earning a Bachelor of Arts in business management in 2016. Her academic background and certifications as a licensed dental assistant from Pima Dental School and a licensed real estate broker provided her with a versatile skill set that she later applied across various professional fields. Her career with the Navy began in 2013, marking the beginning of a long and fruitful association. Initially serving in a general capacity, Ms. Nguyen quickly demonstrated her capabilities, earning a role as a housing management assistant by 2015. In this capacity, she oversaw the housing needs of service members with ranks E-4 and below, ensuring their eligibility for barracks housing, monitoring occupancy, and maintaining accurate reports on 14 buildings. Her responsibilities extended beyond logistical matters, as she also played a crucial role in ensuring the welfare of sailors, particularly during the COVID-19 and Mpox outbreaks, when she managed accommodation for those affected.
Ms. Nguyen’s dedication to her work was further highlighted when she assumed additional responsibilities as a front desk supervisor at Naval Base Coronado. She oversaw 5,000 sailors, including those training to become Navy SEALs. Her ability to manage such a large number of personnel with efficiency and care highlights her leadership skills and commitment to her duties. Before her tenure with the Navy, Ms. Nguyen had already gained considerable experience in various roles. She served as an office manager for four years at Naval Air Station Lemoore, where she supervised operations and contributed significantly to the organization’s daily activities. Her experience also includes roles in the financial sector, holding positions at Navy Federal Credit Union and Bank of America. Additionally, she owned a money transfer business that facilitated transactions between the United States, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Her decision to transition from this business to a career in public service was influenced by her husband, who worked for the state and advised her on the advantages of government employment. This guidance and her father’s encouragement to pursue real estate helped to shape her subsequent career path.
In her various roles, Ms. Nguyen consistently demonstrated a commitment to high achievement. One of her most notable accomplishments was her work as a dental assistant, a role she pursued after completing her certification at Pima Dental School. Despite having no experience in the field, she excelled, graduating with high honors and swiftly advancing to a supervisory position during her externship. Ms. Nguyen’s professional journey is complemented by her civic engagement. She is a dedicated donor to the Disabled American Veterans, also known as DAV, and was an active volunteer with Coronado Lodge 441, Masons of California. After her husband’s passing, she continues to support the organization through donations. Additionally, she serves on the dental advisory board at Pima Dental Institute, mentoring students by sharing her experiences and offering guidance on how to succeed in the dental field. Ms. Nguyen’s late husband, Donald Lake, played a significant role in shaping her life and career. Married for 15 years, she admired his generosity and kindness, which he displayed in many ways, such as paying a neighbor’s rent when they needed it. His influence is evident in her approach to life and work, in which she embodies the values of compassion, integrity, and selflessness. She continues to honor his memory through daily prayers, finding peace and guidance in these moments of reflection.
Looking forward, Ms. Nguyen envisions continuing her service with the Navy, aspiring to become a GS-9 employee and a site manager within the next five years.
