Born in China, Sharon H. Yip, CPA, grew up in Hong Kong and began her professional journey with a Bachelor of Arts in music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1992. She then followed this with a Master of Business Administration from Andrews University in 1994 before moving to the United States in 1995 and becoming a licensed certified public accountant in 1998. She served as a senior tax accountant for Watkins, Meegan, Drury & Co., LLC from 1998 to 2002 and a tax manager for RSM US LLP from 2002 to 2006. In 2003, she earned a Master of Science in accounting and tax consulting from the University of Virginia. Ms. Yip was a senior tax manager with Deloitte from 2006 to 2012 and held the same role with Ellucian from 2012 to 2014.
From 2014 to 2018, Ms. Yip served as the director of federal tax compliance for Navient. In 2017, she started trading and investing in cryptocurrency. She was inspired to establish her own tax practice that focused on cryptocurrency and founded the Cryptocurrency Tax Institute, LLC and Crypto Tax Advisors, LLC in 2018. Furthermore, she brings her expertise in accounting and cryptocurrency taxation to the Polygon Advisory Group as the co-founder and chief executive officer, where she has excelled since 2020. In 2021, Ms. Yip was certified as a cryptocurrency expert by the Blockchain Council.
Alongside her primary responsibilities, Ms. Yip has authored several articles pertaining to cryptocurrency taxation. These include two ebooks, “A Quick Start Guide to Cryptocurrency Taxation for Crypto Investors” and “A Quick Start Guide to Cryptocurrency Taxation for Tax Practitioners,” in 2018. In 2019, she co-authored the article “Common Issues Encounter in Crypto Tax Compliance” for Bloomberg Tax Research and published the article “Tax Treatment of Cryptocurrency Loss Due to Exchange Shutdown or Investment Scams” in Bloomberg’s Tax Management Memorandum. In order to keep abreast of new developments in taxation and accounting, Ms. Yip maintains professional affiliation with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, and Beta Gamma Sigma, an international business honor society.
Ms. Yip attributes much of her success to her desire to never give up and the work ethic instilled in her by her upbringing in Hong Kong. Having accomplished much throughout her career, she is particularly proud of her work as an expert in cryptocurrency taxation. Her expertise has made her a sought-after resource, and she has notably been invited to consult for the IRS. As she looks toward the future, Ms. Yip plans to continue to grow her firm and remains passionate about utilizing her expertise to help others.
